Kim Sherlock

Mt Albert Area Coordinator: Kim Sherlock

Kim Sherlock is Mt Albert area co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Support Auckland and for streets sprinkled through her patch she must be one of the suburb's most recognisable faces. Kim, initially upset at the mindless tagging in her area, attended a public meeting called by the Anne Duncan Real Estate organisation and supported by Neighbourhoold Support Auckland. She ended the night picking up the NS baton, agreeing to act as local co-ordinator – working with Mt Albert community constable Darren Calkin to spread the NS message that closer, friendlier neighbourhoods create richer communities and act as a barrier to crime. Her own motive for getting involved with Neighbourhood Support was her daughter - "I want her to grow up in a safe, friendly and family-orientated community". She left that initial meeting with a clipboard of around 40 names and addresses, and has turned those leads into a NS network of 25 Mt Albert streets. Add those to a stack of groups she has reactivated and revitalised and the coverage swells to close to 90 streets. Until Kim's arrival, Darren was frustrated at the local apathy towards Neighbourhood Support, suggesting "people have their heads in the sand. But, while apathy remains a problem across the city, interest in Neighbourhood Support has blossomed in Mt Albert, largely thanks to Kim's commitment. However, she too is dismayed by "the ostrich mentality". Kim hopes people join NS because they want to get to know their neighbours better and build richer, more vibrant communities. Households who join only because they are worried about crime "miss out on all the cool stuff", she says. Like enjoying a glass of wine with the new street arrival, sharing jokes at the annual barbecue, pot-luck dinners …. finding a power source when you really need it! As long as people like Kim Sherlock are prepared to give to organisations like NS, the surer we can be that Zoe will get the future she deserves.
